Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Dragon and a dictation recorder?

Dragon software converts your speech to text in real time as you dictate into a computer or microphone. A digital dictation recorder captures your voice as an audio file, which is then transcribed later - either manually by a typist or via software. Many professionals use both: a recorder in the field, Dragon at the desk.

Do I need Dragon software or is cloud speech recognition enough?

It depends on your workflow. Dragon Professional works offline, has deep Windows application integration, and can automate complex tasks by voice. Cloud speech recognition is accessible from any browser, requires no local installation, and is often more cost-effective for occasional users. We can help you work out which approach suits your situation.

What dictation hardware do you recommend for healthcare?

For healthcare workflows, Philips SpeechMike and SpeechOne devices are widely used with Dragon Medical One. Olympus digital recorders work well for clinicians who prefer to dictate remotely and have audio transcribed. The right choice depends on whether you are dictating directly into an EMR or using a separate transcription workflow.

Is Dragon Medical One available in Australia?

Yes. Dragon Medical One is available through Voice Recognition Australia, an authorised Nuance/Microsoft reseller. It is a cloud-based subscription product designed specifically for healthcare documentation. Pricing is per user per year - contact Voice Recognition Australia for current Australian pricing.

What is a foot pedal used for in dictation?

A foot pedal lets a typist or transcriptionist control audio playback hands-free during transcription - play, pause, rewind and fast-forward using their feet while their hands remain on the keyboard. Philips and Olympus both make foot pedals designed for their respective dictation workflows.

Can Dragon work with Philips or Olympus voice recorders?

Dragon Professional can transcribe audio files from digital voice recorders, including Philips and Olympus devices, as long as the recording is single-speaker audio in a supported format (DS2, DSS, MP3, WAV, WMA). This is useful for professionals who prefer to dictate away from their desk and transcribe later.
