There’s a moment a lot of parents describe almost word for word. You ask your child about the book they just read, or the science topic they’ve been doing, and they explain it back to you clearly — detail, opinion, the lot. Then they sit down to write half a page about it and produce three flat sentences that say almost nothing. The knowledge is obviously there. It just isn’t reaching the page.
Teachers see the same gap from the other side: a student who talks well in class and hands in written work that badly undersells them. When spoken ability runs well ahead of written output like this, two conditions come up most often — dyslexia and dysgraphia. They get mixed up constantly, partly because they often travel together. But they’re not the same thing, and knowing which one you’re looking at changes what actually helps.
The short version
Dyslexia is primarily about language and spelling. Dysgraphia is primarily about the physical and organisational act of writing. Both can throttle how much of a student’s thinking survives the trip onto paper, and for both, letting the student say the answer instead of write it can remove the bottleneck — but it isn’t a cure, and it isn’t automatic.
What dysgraphia actually is
Dysgraphia is a difficulty with the writing process itself. That can show up as messy or painfully slow handwriting, an awkward or tiring pencil grip, letters and words that come out inconsistently, and trouble organising thoughts into sentences on the page even when the ideas are clear out loud. The physical effort of forming letters eats the working memory a student needs for the actual content, so by the time they’ve wrestled a sentence into legible form, half of what they wanted to say has evaporated.
The tell with dysgraphia is the mismatch between handwriting and everything else. A student who can read fine, spell reasonably when it isn’t handwritten, and explain their reasoning aloud — but whose written output is slow, laboured and far shorter than their thinking — is showing the classic pattern. Writing-related learning differences are estimated to affect somewhere between 5% and 20% of students, so in a class of thirty this is not a rare case.
What dyslexia actually is
Dyslexia is a difference in how the brain processes the sounds and structure of language. It’s usually identified through reading, but for a huge number of students the harder day-to-day problem is the reverse: spelling. Mapping sounds to letters stays effortful and unreliable, often for life, even for people who have long since learned to read well.
That has a quiet, corrosive effect on writing. Every longer or less familiar word becomes a decision — do I know how to spell this? — and the safe move is to dodge it and reach for a shorter word the student is sure of. The result is writing that’s careful, short, and says far less than the student knows, because the vocabulary they actually think in never makes it onto the page. In Australia, dyslexia is estimated to affect around one in ten people, and language-based learning differences as a group affect an estimated 15–20% of the population.
How to tell which one you’re seeing
You often can’t cleanly, and you don’t have to in order to start helping — the two overlap and frequently co-occur. But a few rough questions point the way. Is the handwriting itself slow, messy or physically tiring? That leans dysgraphia. Is reading and spelling the sticking point, with the student avoiding words they can’t spell? That leans dyslexia. Can the student type more comfortably than they can handwrite? That suggests the barrier is motor rather than linguistic. Does spelling collapse regardless of whether they’re typing or handwriting? That points back toward dyslexia.
A proper assessment — through a psychologist, a specialist teacher, or an occupational therapist for the motor side — is worth getting, because it shapes the right mix of support. But the functional problem in front of you is usually the same either way: the writing is suppressing what the student actually knows.
Why speech-to-text helps both
This is the part that matters, and it’s the same for either condition. When a student dictates instead of writes, the barrier — whether it’s spelling or the physical grind of handwriting — is removed at the exact point where it does the damage: the moment of getting thoughts down. Studies of dictation with students who have learning differences are consistent on the upside. Given speech-to-text, many produce longer and more accurate texts than they manage by hand, because they can compose at the level they think rather than the level they can reliably transcribe.

What it won’t do — and the honest caveats
Speech-to-text is a way around the barrier, not a way to remove the underlying condition. It won’t teach a dyslexic student to spell or replace proper literacy instruction, and it won’t fix handwriting. Dictation is also a skill in its own right: students need to learn to speak in complete phrases, pause naturally, and — importantly — proofread. Dictation errors aren’t the same as spelling errors; the software might produce a real, correctly spelled word that simply isn’t the one the student said, which a spell-checker will never catch. That review step has to be taught, not assumed.
There are practical bits too. A quiet-ish spot and a decent microphone make a real difference, and whether dictation is allowed in a particular exam is a case-by-case decision made with the school — which is exactly why it works best as routine classroom practice, not a last-minute exam trick.
Why we keep saying “it depends on the student”
